This video is great - from the point of view of an Evolutionary Biologist using evidence from Anthropologists. Peter talks about play as a means of teaching essential life (survival) skills in "hunter gather" communities.
One thing I took out of his talk is a common mis-conception about play based learning (see article below too), and it is that true play needs to be controlled by the child not the adult. Sure, the adult can make suggestions but the decisions have to come from the child. Play is where children learn they are in control (12:40-13:20) which they need if they are to grow up happy and healthy.
